While known as the oil and gas capital of Canada, Calgary has been quietly evolving into a very bike centric city. Sitting at the foot of the rocky mountains there is no one ‘type’ of cycling that dominates Calgary. Dirty, muddy and bloody mountain bikers get their fix within 30 minutes of the south and western borders of Calgary. Roadies drill it on many of the long rolling hills surrounding Calgary or have the opportunity to taste blood in their breath if they decide to bang out a Strava PB (or bag a KOM) on Highwood pass. There is an increasing focus on city biking with the designation of bike lanes and over 900 KM’s of city bike paths. B-Line (an indoor biking facility which allows all riders to keep their skills dialled over the winter) opened their doors in September of 2018, the tech startup 4iiii has made Calgary their home, Garmin has moved its Canadian head office to Cochrane, and one of the inventors of the VPP suspension system calls Calgary home. We truly are a bike rich community.
